I remember the Camel from the 80s versions of MSFS (with wire-frame scenery) It really was the easiest to fly. No gyroscopic effect from the engine spinning around on the nose. It was quite docile. About 15 yrs. later, a guy showed up with a real Camel F.1 at an Antique Aircraft Assoc. fly-in. I remember being impressed that he had to land in the grass between the runway and the taxiway (tail skid). After discussing the flight characteristics with him for a few minutes, it became clear why he only flew it to a few shows a year. The chances of turning the plane into a ball of sticks and cloth were pretty good in anything other than perfect conditions. Love to try one. Even Cole Palen lost them on landing fairly regularly, though, and there couldnt have been many, if any, who knew more about flying rotaries than he did. Bertie |
