Best Polyurethane Paint for Homebuilt by
jls
We used Ditzler. What do *you* use? I noticed Joe Schumacher and Mark
Annick used a NAPA polyurethane paint (Martin Senour?) on the RV-8 they
erected and floo on teevy.
Thanks and eternal gratefulness.
And best regards.

John in Kentucky Asks by
jls
Where can I find a set of pistons to hop up an O-200?
Answer: John, use stock C-85 pistons. They are 3/8" higher than O-200
pistons and will give you that "pop-up" effect, that is, a little higher
compression. Not legal, of course, in a certified aircraft, or aircraft
engine you plan to...

NC Lake Dystrophication by
jls
I had to look up BWB's word "eutrophication" in the title of his
well-written and fascinating narrative. As he used the word, it has to do
with nutrients in the lakes sufficient to provide healthy ecosystems ---
food like algae for organisms like protozoa, fish, and otters.
Here in WNC where the...

Blow-Proofs by
jls
We wound up using blow-proof gaskets for the exhaust of the powerful,
dynamic A-65 Continental on the Taylorcraft. The inner ring is something
of a spiral wound gasket of soft aluminum and rotates. I had to grind off
an edge of the steel housing in order to clear the intake pipes on...

Blew a Gasket by
jls
First time for me too. There were reports the dynamic, powerful A-65
sounded sick but it made plenty of power. Vern said, "It's poppin' and
crackin'. And Travis said the engine noise was "unusual." And Alan said,
"Sump'n not right about that." So we pulled the cowl and sure enough a
gasket...

Camloc Installation Tools by
jls
Anybody ever made any of these? The pliers would be easy to make. The
drill jig is $475, the dimpling tools about $300 apiece, and the lockwasher
tool $100. Anybody ever make any of these, or are they patented? If they
are patented, maybe that explains the exorbitant prices.
I made and...

Dry Valve Lash by
jls
This must be an obscure area because googling it didn't bring up anything in
usenet. Be that as it may the O-300 we are presently doing a top on has
more than .110" dry valve clearance under the rocker toe on several of the
valves. That reading is the clearance between the rocker arm toe and...

Sun'n Fun Used to Be the Gathering of the Good Ol' Boys of Flying by

'Taint now. Get ready to have your wallet plucked. And that rule about
ice chests and backpacks, that's so you'll not be bringing in your beer at
$5 a sixpack from the supermarket down the street. You'll need to buy it
at $4 per beer and $10 per hamburger on premises.
A fool and his money...

O-200 Cylinder Repair by
jls
Anybody know who has the best repair station for cylinders here in the SE?
These look to need new guides and seats, new studs, and honing.
Plus, we'd like to get it done quickly cause we want to fly!
Last I checked you could buy a cylinder, valves (already installed), piston,
rings, rockershaft,...

Restoring Fiberglas Wheelpants by
jls
New at this am I so how about a little advice here? First of all I have
already washed one of the two wheelpants and it was filthy with oil, grease,
5606, rottweiler pi**, and ramp dreck, so the washing took a long hour
scrubbing and rinsing. I'm thinking that when the sanding and paint
removal...

Aviation Story by

A friend from Texas who worked for the railroad and liked to fly his
supercub along the tracks decided to have a little fun one night. He flew
just off the ground down the tracks and just before he got in sight of a
freight train roaring down the tracks, he turned on his landing light...

Hole Finder by
[email protected]
There are a few accomplished and talented brains here that can help
with this. We have a tailwheel steering control horn with holes
already drilled at right angles through its long shaft for two AN-3
bolts-- to fix it inside the rudder's vertical tube. Now when the
shaft is inserted up inside...
