430/530 Back Course Question... by
Bill Hale
Here's one for U all. 530s.
Or as we learned in Melborne FL, home of the 27
Back Course LOC approach, all-y'all is the plural.
When selecting VLOC mode, the thing behaves correctly
on a BC approach... you set the ILS FRONT COURSE on the
yellow arrow HSI course datum, and inbound on the BC,
the...

"cleared to ... when direct ..." by
John Harper
Got an odd clearance the other day, on climbout from Santa Monica
(IFR but in perfect VMC): "climb and maintain 6000 when direct
Ventura". I took this to mean that someone would later clear
me direct VTU, whereupon I would climb. However I never got
such a clearance, and later an evidently nervous...

Securing portable oxygen by
dutch
I have a new IFR rating and am considering some higher altitude flights now
that I can drop down through cloud decks. Question: for those of you who
carry oxygen, how do you secure the tank so that you can still reach and see
to adjust the flow valve? Vendors sell seatback packs, but those...

Sold out by IFR by
Mike Rapoport
I used to subscribe to IFR until I realized that they offered a much better
rate to new subscribers than to existing ones. After realizing this, my
four year old decided to subscribe :-). Today he recieved a solicitation
from another aviation magazine. Obviously they sold his (and my) name...

Changes to Aircraft Approach Categories?! by
skyliner
I've been away from this newsgroup for quite some time, so forgive me if
this has already been covered.
The other day, one of my colleagues pointed out something I hadn't noticed
in the latest set of approach plates, which came out at the end of December.
Its on page A2, under "Aircraft Approach...

AFSS clearance delivery by
Dan Luke
In the back of the A/FD there are special phone numbers published to be
used for calling AFSS's to get an IFR clearance. I was completely
unaware of this until last Sunday, when I called for a void time leaving
Cross City, FL. The specialist said he'd be glad to help me, "...but
next time please...

IFR Refresher January 2004 Quiz by
Paul Tomblin
Ok, this isn't the first time this has happened, but this month's quiz
asks you for the airport ident of the airport you use if you can't get the
local altimeter settings. Ok, the plate says to use "Whichita
Mid-Continent", that part I got. But then the quiz answer says to look on
the en route...

Passed my IFR checkride today. by
[email protected]
Thanks to all on this group who have answered various
questions over the last five months.
I passed my instrument checkride today!
My last checkride (other than BFR's) was in 1983.
I was very nervous screwed up the first manouver and after that all went well.
I now have a license to learn.

Anywhere WX users - free tool for easier e-mail, waypoint entry, etc... by
Mark Astley
Please excuse this shameless plug...
For Anywhere WX users (well actually, anyone using a PocketPC while
airborne), I've created a custom Soft Input Panel (SIP) which lets you enter
commonly used text fragments with a single tap. There are also some more
advanced features in the works, like the...

Type certificates by
Tarver Engineering
Knowing what Part 21 Type Certificate you have matters because that is how
the other Parts of CFR 14 are tied together. Say one doesn't know they have
an experimental type certificate, then how can they know that Part 23 and 43
are not applicable? Additional regulatory requirements are made for...

KLN94 LOC DME Source by
Greg Esres
Anyone have a tip as to the best way to enter the LOC DME source on
the KLN94?
The NRST function won't always pick it up, if there are a lot of
intersections around.
I've tried loading the fix into an alternate flight plan, and then do
a DIRECT operation later, but I couldn't get that to work.

Q about lost comms on weird clearance by
Paul Tomblin
I normally fly out of Rochester NY, which is towered and class C. And 99%
of the time my clearance route is "Vectors as filed". But yesterday I had
to stop off at Batavia to pick up something, and then continue on to
Goderich Ontario. Since it's just easier to be on an IFR flight plan...

horrible ifr training x-c by
Dave Jacobowitz
Okay, I've been doing this IFR training thing now for a
few months, flying once or twice a week, and it's been
going pretty well. I've not really had any trouble with
the knowledge part (self studied for the written and
got 95%) and have been doing nicely with the skill stuff
as well, getting the...

"K" in VOR identifier by
Jack Cunniff
I had a first today; flying VFR across New England on this clear winter
day, my route took me over Bradley, KBDL. I always tune VORs during my
flights, so tuned Bradley's VOR.
Identifying, though, was interesting. The morse identifier was FOUR
characters, the last three of which were B D L. I had...
